Tuesday, March 11: Machine Head, "Heavy Lies the Crown"
“Heavy Lies the Crown” was not nearly as disastrous as the rest of Catharsis, but it was still way too long at nearly 9 minutes and definitely took way too long to get rolling. The track certainly benefited from a heavy dose of Phil Demmel and Dave McClain, who were both in the pocket and covered up a lot of Robb Flynn’s sins. But Flynn’s apparent desire for self-sabotage dragged Machine Head down with him, and an alarmingly large portion of the track’s runtime was mostly just aimless flailing and riffs and rhythms that, while still potent and distinct to these players, were redundant bordering on boilerplate. It was a genuine shame that Machine Head’s lineup had to end like this: “Heavy Lies the Crown” had its moments, but the fraying and disconnect was obvious from the jump.

Up From the Skies, Aliens Exist! (Crossover Among Us AU)
I started putting together a crossover among us au with some of my fandoms because someone told me how they love among us fics and my ass went "omg i used to love among us, let me write something"
i think i mightve been itching for something platonic cause why am i so excited about the potential friendships? like, between those from different fandoms? i might have the slightly bit of someone catching a crush (and then either they or the person they like dies), but for the most part im here for introducing the faves to each other and have people die 😌
im gonna start watching old among us videos to get back in the headspace of the game, and i might even start playing it again myself so i get some new hands-on experience 😭 but i'll mostly be basing it on 2020-2021 among us (in it's height) cause idk all the changes that well
oh! and the fandoms im currently planning on cobbling together are: mcu spiderman trilogy, blue beetle (2023), voltron: legendary defender, and homestuck. basically anything i liked that was related to space even a lil bit (and most of these are a lotta bit!)
when the first chapter of this insanity is posted, i'll make another post here to say so. im so excited for all the murder and betrayal 🤧 i already know who's dying first... and im so sad (my ass had to spin-wheel it cause i did NOT wanna part with any of my pookies 💀 but thats like... the whole point. lotta people gonna die LMAO. but now that the first has been picked out, i feel more comfortable with all the other characters im gonna kill off 😇)
i think im gonna start talking about my fics here more often, might even post some of my stuff, old and new, here. or should i open a sideblog for that 🤔 idk if i wanna go through the trouble of that, so i might stick to posting it here. who knows!

In a New York Times profile of the Michigan Republican Party, state Rep. Lisa McClain offers a quintessentially stoic midwestern insight about the ailing state party that perfectly sums up the GOP's national dynamic too.
“It’s not going real well," McClain told the Times' Nick Corasaniti.
“The ability to raise money," she continued, "we’ve got a lot of donors sitting on the sideline. That’s not an opinion. That’s a fact. It’s just a plain fact. We have to fix that.”
Though McClain was assessing the divide between the state's monied benefactors, such as former Trump Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and its Trumpy grassroots activists, she may as well have been talking about national GOP donors' frantic search for a savior as the MAGA grassroots coalesce around Donald Trump for the 2024 nomination.
In fact, Corasaniti's piece—an anatomy of GOP dysfunction encapsulated by the Republican Party in a Rust Belt swing state—mirrors rifts emerging across the country at both the state and national levels. Corasaniti portrays a party coming apart at the seams after its drubbing in the '22 cycle in a state where Republicans roundly lost the gubernatorial contest, every statewide executive office (e.g., attorney general and secretary of state), and control of both legislative chambers. A hat trick, if you will.
The key cast of characters includes:
Tudor Dixon, 2022 gubernatorial nominee, Bible-thumper, anti-abortion activist, and former right-wing news host.
Fervent 2020 election deniers Kristina Karamo and Matthew DePerno, 2022 GOP nominees for secretary of state and attorney general, respectively.
Meshawn Maddock, former co-chair of the Republican Party and leader of Women for Trump, who has been charged in the fake elector scheme.
The DeVos family, longtime Republican Party donors and Michigan establishment heavyweights.
Every one of those is effectively a stand-in for similarly situated Republican players in GOP apparatuses around the country.
Following Michigan Republicans' midterm election implosion, a round of rapid-fire finger-pointing broke out, with MAGA party officials blaming Dixon for a toxic near-total abortion ban position and soft fundraising, Dixon blaming both the party and old-guard donors for her campaign's collapse, and party officials chastising donors for insufficiently funding their cuckoo election-denying candidates.
Corasaniti writes:
A state party autopsy days after the election, made public by Ms. Dixon, acknowledged that “we found ourselves consistently navigating the power struggle between Trump and anti-Trump factions of the party” and that Mr. Trump “provided challenges on a statewide ballot.”
True enough. On the national stage, every 2024 Republican hopeful but Trump is presently trying to thread the needle of enthusing high-dollar donors while managing to peel away pro-Trump voters open to alternatives.Campaign Action
Back in Michigan, establishment type Dave Trott, a retired GOP congressman and former state party donor, dished about the Republican elite's distrust of former GOP co-chair Maddock, a MAGA activist.
"Meshawn was never connected to the donor base, and so having her as the vice chair [of the party] for a lot of us was a showstopper,” Trott explained. "We just knew she would never be someone that would be rational in her approach to state party politics."
In response, Maddock expressed a reciprocal lack of trust in the party's establishment muckety-mucks.
“The state party needs the wealthy RINOs who often fund it to come to terms with what the actual voters on the right want,” Maddock told the Times. Wealthy donors, she added, need to treat the base "with an ounce of respect for once.”
The same could be said of national Republican donors who have never crossed paths with actual base voters and apparently still believe Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin can save them from Trump.
That same mutual distrust and disgust between establishment Republican donors and state party officials is also playing out in Georgia, where popular Republican Gov. Brian Kemp warned well-heeled donors earlier this year they could "no longer rely on" the state Republican Party to win elections. Kemp has effectively built a parallel political apparatus after urging donors to abandon the pro-Trump state party.
And then there are the anti-abortion zealots pointing fingers at everyone else for their own deeply unpopular position. Dixon's support for a strict abortion ban doomed her candidacy, just like the efforts of Ohio Republicans to ban abortion there sank an anti-abortion ballot measure earlier this month.
Following that loss, the nation's premier forced birther group, Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life
America, castigated establishment Republicans and the business community for not pulling their weight in the battle to pass the measure, which would have significantly raised the bar for enshrining abortion protections in Ohio's constitution.
All across the nation, the Republican Party is reckoning with the deal it cut with the devil. In swing states like Michigan and Georgia, red states like Ohio, and nationally, the GOP is cracking up as different factions variously cling to or reject Trump. The damage done may not be fully realized until voters cast their ballots next year, but the Republican Party is entering 2024 in a position so precarious that it almost defies historical comparison.

Carcass, Municipal Waste, Sacred Reich, & Creeping Death Live Show Review: 4/18, Metro, Chicago

BY JORDAN MAINZER
These days, new Carcass albums--and subsequently, tours and live shows--are rare enough to warrant must-see status. Their 2013 comeback, Surgical Steel, ranked among their best ever albums, and 2021′s Torn Arteries (Nuclear Blast) at the very least stood up to their classic material, a feat considering only two albums ago was the disappointment that was their original Swansong. Immediately into the band’s headlining set Tuesday at Metro, it was apparent they’d chug along and smash in as many songs as possible. His bass pointed to the sky like a scepter, Jeff Walker alternated between icy conjuring and guttural growling, tossing seemingly infinite picks into the crowd, while guitarist Bill Steer was his usual understated, but mighty self. And whether soloing or navigating the band through complex time signatures, drummer Daniel Wilding, the band’s drummer since 2012, propelled new and old songs with ease and force. Carcass’s set was, simply, professional, minimally laden with stage banter, maximally laden with enveloping heaviness.

That Carcass is touring with the party-hard thrashing of Municipal Waste and righteous riffage of Sacred Reich is mildly surprising, given that the bands occupy different subgenres of metal. The latter’s lead singer, Phil Rind, even admitted to not being super familiar with the music of the Liverpool death metal legends, also remarking that the last time Sacred Reich played Metro was in the early 90′s with Obituary, who sang “no words, just growls.” But the clear crossover fandom in the crowd was, if not evidence of the decreasing importance of genre purity, certainly a refreshing reminder that heavy music occupies different moods and states of mind that can take place in the same night, or even at once. Municipal Waste conquered first-track sound troubles to deliver a breakneck set of beer-chugging anthems spanning their entire discography. “Shoutout to security,” declared lead vocalist Tony Foresta as they deal with crowd surfers and broken down boxes thrown on stage during “Breathe Grease”. “This is not a Built to Spill show,” he smirked. Celebrating lead guitarist Nick Poulous’s birthday, the Richmond band built their setlist around chant-heavy material, from “You’re Cut Off” and “Sadistic Magician” to band theme song “Born to Party”. As the crowd chanted back, “Municipal Waste is gonna fuck you up,” it felt like they were paying the highest compliment to the people on stage.

Sacred Reich was, as expected, a bit more politically outspoken, or at least unafraid to expose the earnestness behind their songs. Really, anybody who has heard “The American Way” knows the band’s socially conscious, anti-capitalistic stance; these days, their songs look inward to imagine a better world outward. “Manifest Reality”, from the band’s most recent record Awakening (Metal Blade), which was released in 2019 a full 23 years after its predecessor, is a “be the change you want to see in the world” type of song. “Salvation” is, simply, an ode to music. And Awakening’s title track is proof that you can still sound like a mammoth when being compassionate. Like Municipal Waste, Rind has a sense of humor, too: When he announced that the band almost had a new record done to sparse applause, he joked, “We’re thankful for all 7 of you.” But at the end of the day, every Rind wail, every Wiley Arnett guitar solo and Dave McClain snare hit and Joey Radziwill power chord led up to their performance of “Death Squad”, dedicated to founding member Jason Rainey who died of a heart attack in 2020. Sacred Reich's looking forward as long as they can occasionally reflect on their past.

The band most faithful to the spirit of the night’s headliner was the first band who played given the least amount of time. Dallas death metal group Creeping Death combined nimble lead guitars and rhythms that bounced between stomps and barnburners. Their stage setup was remarkably democratic, roaring vocalist Reese Alavi sandwiched between leg-kicking guitarist Trey Pemberton, guitarist A.J. Ross, III, and bassist Eric “Rico” Mejia, tight in both their playing and synchronized hair spinning. Though they played mostly older material, including the blistering title track to their 2021 EP The Edge of Existence, they thankfully performed “Intestinal Wrap”, the single from their upcoming album Boundless Domain (MNRK Heavy). Alavi’s a dynamic vocalist, to the point where you didn’t even feel the absence of Cannibal Corpse’s George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher from the studio version of the song. Creeping Death was certainly the least known among other bands on the bill who have been at it for decades, but they were anything but green.

Jon Seidel, Tina Sfondeles, Matthew Hendrickson, Dave McKinney at Chicago Sun-Times and David Struett and Sophie Sherry at WBEZ:
Michael J. Madigan spent decades building a political empire rivaled in Illinois history only by his most storied peers, rising to become the longtime speaker of the state’s House of Representatives, chair of its Democratic Party and head of a powerhouse tax appeal firm. But in a landmark verdict that could transform the 82-year-old politician into a federal inmate in the twilight of his life, a jury found Madigan guilty Wednesday of a nearly decadelong bribery conspiracy involving ComEd. It also convicted him of a plot to install former 25th Ward Ald. Danny Solis on a state board in exchange for Solis’ help securing private business for Madigan’s law firm. However, the jury stopped far short of delivering the sweeping verdict prosecutors sought. The panel of eight women and four men acquitted Madigan of attempted extortion and other crimes involving Solis and an apartment project in the West Loop. They failed to reach any decision on claims involving a parking lot in Chinatown or AT&T Illinois. Most significantly, jurors couldn’t agree whether to find Madigan guilty of a broad racketeering conspiracy, in which he was accused of turning his political empire into a criminal enterprise. That’s likely cold comfort to the man long known as the “Velvet Hammer.” Madigan, who held the gavel in Springfield for 36 years and was the longest-serving state House leader in the United States, is guilty of 10 counts in all, and he is now a convicted felon. To add insult to injury, the jury tagged Madigan with that label less than 48 hours after President Donald Trump stripped it from Madigan’s onetime political rival, former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, through a full and unconditional pardon. Like Blagojevich once did, Madigan now faces significant prison time. The most serious counts against him carry a maximum of 20 years in prison. No sentencing hearing has been set.
‘It’s still corrupt’
Jurors also failed to reach any verdict regarding Madigan’s co-defendant, 77-year-old Michael McClain, who later smiled and flashed a thumbs-up in the courthouse lobby. He is still challenging his 2023 conviction for his role in the ComEd bribery conspiracy. “Bribery, whether it’s the old-fashioned cash stuffed in an envelope or the more refined version practiced by Madigan, is still illegal,” acting U.S. Attorney Morris “Sonny” Pasqual declared in the Dirksen Federal Courthouse lobby after the verdict was read. “It’s still corrupt, and it’s still against the law.” The top federal prosecutor said his office had yet to decide whether to take Madigan to trial again on the Chinatown or AT&T Illinois schemes, for which jurors returned no verdict. U.S. District Judge John Blakey scheduled the next hearing in the case for May 5. The verdict capped an unpredictable four-month trial that gave jurors an up-front and uncensored look at the practice of behind-the-scenes politics in Chicago and Illinois in the previous decade. The panel heard recorded conversations about an “old-fashioned patronage system,” about ComEd contractors making out “like bandits” and how McClain derided utility officials who resisted political hiring pressures as “dumb s—.” They heard more than 100 secret recordings in all, including many made by Solis. The Sun-Times first broke the news in January 2019 that Solis had been working undercover for the FBI and detailed one of the first recordings that would be heard by jurors in Madigan’s trial. The newspaper’s reporting directly affected the investigation.
‘Tried our very best to come to a unanimous decision’
The feds’ aggressive push against Chicago-style politics dates back to 2014 and led to criminal charges against roughly 20 people in all. Nine have gone to prison so far. Now Madigan, who left office in 2021 amid the burgeoning investigation, could join them. The verdict came down in dramatic fashion Wednesday. It followed nearly 65 hours of deliberations over 11 days. Word of a note from the jury arrived a little before 10 a.m.And in it, they warned of a partial deadlock. “We have come to a unanimous decision on 17 counts,” it said. “We have tried our very best to come to a unanimous decision on the remaining 12 counts and have not been able to do so. It is our belief that this impasse will not be overcome.” Prosecutors told the judge they were “amenable” to the partial verdict, and Blakey sent a note back to the group advising them that they did “not have to reach a unanimous verdict on all charges,” but any verdict they delivered would be final. Word of that verdict officially arrived about 15 minutes later. By then, Blakey’s 12th-floor courtroom had already swelled with reporters, lawyers and others, including Pasqual. Two of Madigan’s daughters sat in the courtroom’s front row.
On Wednesday, a jury found former Illinois House Speaker and former Democratic Party of Illinois chair Michael Madigan (D) guilty on 10 counts regarding ComEd bribery and the plot to put Danny Solis in as the 25th Ward Alderman in Chicago, saddling him with the “convicted felon” label. Madigan was ruled not guilty on 7 counts, and deadlocked on 6 other counts.
Over the last several decades, Madigan was one of the most transformative political figures in the Land of Lincoln to the point that he was unofficially the REAL Governor of Illinois.

THESE 46 DEMS NEED TO LOSE THEIR JOBS
because they all joined the MAGAsswipes to pass the Laken Riley Act, which puts immigrants at huge risk.
SOME OF THESE REPRESENTATIVES ARE FROM SANCTUARY STATES. their names are in bold, since it's two times the fuckery to help this bullshit law pass WHEN YOU ARE REPRESENTING A STATE WHOSE POPULACE WANTS TO PROTECT IMMIGRANTS. a house divided against itself won't stand. unless these Democrats, and all Democrats, learn to speak with a united voice on matters that directly harm their voting base, they are going to be helping to chain this country to the back of the MAGAsswipes' fascist truck.
if your representative is listed and you're angry about it, get their office's contact info and wreck their phone. your taxes pay these motherfuckers; they should work for you. they should represent you. they shouldn't get to the Hill and suddenly forget what their constituants actually asked them to support or block.

Colorado Officer Who Confronted Elijah McClain Found Guilty Of Criminally Negligent Homicide, But Is That Enough For Justice?
A Colorado jury Thursday convicted one of two officers charged in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain, a Black pedestrian who was put in a chokehold and injected with a powerful sedative, and it acquitted the other officer.
The jury convicted Aurora Police Officer Randy Roedema of criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault.
Former Aurora officer Jason Rosenblatt was acquitted. Both had been charged with reckless manslaughter, as well as the lesser charges of criminally negligent homicide and assault.
Sentencing was set for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 5.
Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, whose office was appointed as the special prosecutors in the case, said more work must be done to make policing safer.
“Today’s verdict is about accountability; everyone is accountable and equal under the law,” he said in a statement. “And hopefully today’s verdict is another step in the healing process for the Aurora community and the state.”
McClain’s mother, Sheneen McClain, walked out of the courtroom with a raised fist after the split verdict and said she was not satisfied with the outcome.
“America needs to start telling the truth about its history and changing the way it treats all the people that pay into its systems of control,” she said in a statement to ABC News on Friday. “Don’t say sorry to me for humans that fail even their own kind. My soul still cries out for Divine Justice For My Son Elijah McClain.”
A pair of responding paramedics, also set for trial this year, injected McClain with ketamine to sedate him after police video showed him writhing on the ground, saying, “I can’t breathe, please,” and throwing up. He apologized for vomiting.
Minutes later, McClain was found to have no pulse in the ambulance and went into cardiac arrest, according to a report released in fall 2019 by a local prosecutor, Dave Young.
McClain was revived but later declared brain dead and then taken off life support. He died Aug. 30. -(source: nbc news/abc news)
